The Scoop on Herbal Remedies For Menopause

Filed under: Menopause — Linda @ 7:54 pm

In the United States, herbal remedies for menopause have not yet been used to the extent that they are overseas. In Europe and Germany in particular, herbal remedies for menopause are widely accepted and are covered by insurance. This unfortunately is not the case in the United States. Soy products seem to be the only recognized herbal remedy that is widely recommended.

This is because the active ingredient in soy is phytoestrogens, which is naturally occurring and is in high concentrations in soy. Phytoestrogen is the base for some of the commercially available hormone replacement therapies that have been developed. The benefits and results of this active ingredient are very well documented.

There are other herbal remedies for menopause that have had mixed results in tests, including ginseng, black cohosh, dong quai, and evening primrose. Black cohosh seems to be the one that most women find effective. The results will depend on the quality of the product being tested, the group doing the testing and also who is paying for the testing.

When looking at the use of herbal remedies for menopause it is important to be aware of the quality of the product that you are using. You can do this by reading the labels and researching online each of the products to get an objective view on it. It is also very important that if you are using herbal remedies for menopause that you keep an accurate record of what you are taking, how much you are taking, and how often you are taking it.

This information should be shared with your doctor to keep him or her informed of what you are using. This is a good practice to have with any type of medication or supplement. This is because some prescription drugs will react very badly to some supplements and the last thing you want is to have a bad reaction to a medication. The amounts of the herbal supplement you take can also have other effects that are not desirable.

When taking soy protein you should not exceed 50 grams per day. 50 grams daily has been shown to relieve menopause symptoms over the short term. While over the long term it has been shown to help with bone density and your cholesterol levels. This amount is what you can expect to get by eating or drinking soy products. Amounts greater than that can cause an increase in your risks for estrogen dependent breast cancer, so care should be taken. The idea behind herbal remedies for menopause is to relieve symptoms and not to cause other and potentially more severe problems.
