Although hot flashes often creep up on women unexpectedly, there are some cool solutions or cures for hot flashes. Some cures for hot flashes can actually be done before a hot flash comes on, to alleviate their severity. Others can be done while you are actually feeling the effects.
The first thing you should do is to know what triggers a hot flash. Keeping a daily record of when you get them, what you eat before you get a hot flash, and how long they last can go a long way in preventing future severe hot flashes. Certain foods, especially spicy ones can trigger a severe hot flash. You also need to limit your alcohol and caffeine intake as they are proven to produce very sweaty hot flashes.
Dressing in layers is a must during this time. You should stick to cotton or a very light layer of clothing underneath and then put a warmer layer on top. This is especially helpful when the chills come on. You can immediately take off the top layer so that your body returns to a more normal temperature quickly. At night time you should sleep in a very thin cotton nightgown or just a t-shirt. This will help keep you cooler so you can get a good nights sleep. Cotton sheets are recommended also, as opposed to a heavier material or silk, which surprisingly does not make for a cool nights sleep.
Another cure for hot flashes is to relax. It sounds simple enough, but while you are going through the hot flash it is very hard to do. During the day you should try simple breathing techniques or yoga to calm your body and mind before the hot flash occurs. Anxiety is a main producer of sweat, so the less anxiety you have the less you will perspire.Â
Keeping the temperature in your house or office down will help to control the heat you feel, as will having ice cold water nearby at all times. Even if you are not experiencing a hot flash, sipping on ice or ice water will help to lower your body temperature before the hot flash occurs to alleviate some of the symptoms. These are some very simple cures for hot flashes that often will make them less and less disruptive.
